Book Excerpt 2
In the Beginning
I slept for several hours and was then awoken in the middle of the night by unusual cramping in my legs. I tried to go back to sleep but I could not get comfortable. If my legs were straight, it felt like I needed to bend them. If they were bent, it felt like I needed to straighten them. They were cramping and aching like never before. I finally decided to go see if my mom or dad had any advice to ease the discomfort. I pulled the covers back, stood up, and then fell straight to the floor. I paused in confusion and a little disbelief that my legs had given out on me, and tried again. As I tried to bear weight on my legs, they buckled in pain sending me to the floor again. Now, even more concerned about this unusual feeling and inability to bear weight on my legs, my desire to get to my parents grew stronger. So I did the only thing I could do, and army crawled my way out of my room, down the hall and to my mom’s side of the bed (it was closest to the door). Calling out to them along the way but waking them completely only once I was at the bedside, and they discovered the pain, the fever, the chills and the dehydration that seemed to be sweeping over me.
